Scrimshaw I
SKU: SQ6221580
63.5 (W) x 91.5 cm (H) x 4cm Framed in Tasmanian Oak
Oils and charcoal on board
Scrimshaw is the engraving on bone or ivory. Australia’s whaling dates back to 1791 and sailors on whalers carved whale teeth to pass time. The bones were burned as fuel so I have sketched in charcoal to mark the history.
This sea-faring vessel is in full sail and is loosely sketched in charcoal on a whale ‘tooth’.
The background is a deep dark blue black is painted in oils.
