How to Commission Unique Artwork in Melbourne: A Step-by-Step Guide

Commissioning artwork can be an exciting way to own a piece that truly reflects your taste and personality.

If you are in Melbourne and considering an art commission, you might wonder how to start, what to expect, and how to ensure the final piece matches your vision. I’ve painted well over 500 custom made artwork and I want to share a clear, practical guide to help you commission artwork with confidence.

My Studio is in Elsternwick and you are able to schedule a time to visit and view artwork to see the detail and quality. I can also bring artwork to your home so you can view it within your own lighting and wall colour.

Understand What You Want Before You Start

Take some time to clarify what you want from your custom made artwork. Often this step involves finding similar artwork you like but are the 'wrong size', the colours aren't perfect or perhaps you have a photo of a holiday destination you want painted.

• Decide on the subject or theme: Do you want a floral, landscape, abstract, or something that combines abstract and landscape?

• Choose the size and medium: Consider where you will display the piece and tray placing masking tape on the wall, so that you can get a feel for how big an artwork you want. I can help you with this on a home visit. By looking at my artwork you are able to ascertain what materials you prefer (oil, acrylic, mixed media).

• Photograph the Space: Send me through a picture of the Space - the wall it will hang and one or two pictures of the room to help me visualise the elements that will impact the artwork. If I am on a home visit - I will do that.

The Process

Clear communication is key to a successful art commission - we can work by phone,in person and email. Here’s how to approach it:

• Describe your idea in detail: Share your theme, preferred colours, size, and any reference images.

• Timeline: I will work in with your deadline - there might be other commissions ahead of yours but at the time of our conversation I can give you an indication of long the artwork will take.

A sketch or sample is signed off to ensure you know what you are getting.

• The process: I provide sketches or drafts before beginning to paint your bespoke artwork. There is one round of tweaks or small revisions included in the quoted price. I send through photos/video call of the artwork to allow you input - you are also able to visit the studio

• Pricing and payment: The total cost is provided in a Quote - outlining the 50% deposit requirements and payment schedule. The deposit is non-refundable.

• Delivery: After you have approved the artwork it will be sent to you or your chosen framer if you have chosen a frame.
